Gauging, also known as stretching, has been around for centuries. In recent years, however, it has become more and more widespread. Gauging is lengthen, widening, or extending the piercing hole. To gauge, you slowly progress from one gauged earring to the next. Generally, when your ears are pierced they are an 18 or 16 gauge
This is a Conversion Chart to show the size of each gauge. I found this one at a great site called Body Circle Designs. As you can see, some of the gauges might seem a little outrageous, but they are really cool when you see them in real life.
